Letter from the Executive Director
Dear friends & colleagues,
There were several exciting developments at the Japan ICU Foundation during the 2016-17 Fiscal Year (April 1, 2016 – March 31, 2017). We welcomed two new members to our staff, launched a grants initiative for ICU faculty and students, reformed our scholarship program, held the culminating Rethinking Peace Studies conference at ICU, and continued to expand our Global Link summer program in New York City. It was an exciting year!
In the following report, we showcase some of the highlights from the year. We also provide a financial summary of the support we were able to offer ICU through the JICUF endowment and the generous donations of ICU alumni and friends.
As you will see, we continue to seek creative ways to live up to our mission of supporting ICU’s “broadly international and ecumenically Christian dimensions.” Thank you to everyone who has joined us by giving of your time and resources. Highlights from FY2016-17
Six ICU Students Participate in Young Leaders Development Project in China
Last November, ICU Professor of International Relations Stephen Nagy led a group of undergraduate students to China. The Japan ICU Foundation awarded him a grant of ¥1,100,000 to subsidize the Japan-China Young Leaders Development Project (YLDP). JICUF Launches Global Scholarship Program
JICUF is pleased to announce the JICUF Global Scholarship. There are four subcategories within this program, namely the Syrian Scholars Initiative, the U.S. Scholars Initiative, the Exchange Student Initiative and the Study Abroad Initiative.
Rethinking Peace Studies Conference Held at ICU
From June 2nd to 4th, the Japan ICU Foundation and ICU’s Social Science Research Institute hosted the Rethinking Peace Studies (RPS) conference in the Kiyoshi Togasaki Memorial Dialogue House on the ICU campus.
First Asian Junior Linguistics Conference Held at ICU
JICUF awarded Associate Professor of Linguistics Seunghun Lee a grant of ¥300,000 this fall to host the Asian Junior Linguists (AJL) Conference at ICU. Professor Lee organized the conference with Professor Tomoyuki Yoshida, the current chair of ICU’s psychology and linguistics department, to provide a forum for pre-doctoral linguistics students to present their work. The conference took place from December 2nd (Friday) to 4th (Sunday) in ICU’s Dialogue House.
