On April 2, two new Japan Education Pathways (JEP) Scholars matriculated at ICU. Solomiia, who is from Ukraine, and Zahra, who is from Afghanistan, are this year’s recipients of this scholarship.
Kseniia, one of the recipients of the Japan-Ukraine University Pathways (JUUP) scholarship that JICUF and ICU provided, is graduating from ICU this week. She will be attending the ICU Graduate School from April. We asked her to look back at her four years at ICU.

This month, JICUF and ICU agreed to establish a graduate scholarship for students who have fled conflict and relocated to Japan. JICUF and ICU already offer full undergraduate scholarships to two new students with refugee backgrounds annually through the Japan Education Pathways program, and will add one full scholarship in the master’s program starting spring 2026.

The Japan ICU Foundation and ICU will launch a new scholarship for students with refugee backgrounds. The Education Pathways Scholarship will support two new undergraduate students annually starting in April 2025. It is a full scholarship that covers tuition and fees, on-campus accommodation and stipend. JICUF and ICU will share the cost of the scholarship.
The Japan ICU Foundation is excited to announce the establishment of the Nelson Ranch Scholarship. The Scholarship was established in honor of ICU’s long-standing relationship with the United States and its Christian heritage. The donors have expressed their vision for the Scholarship as: “Our hope is that in some small way the Scholarship will promote peace in the world and help bind these two nations with the Love of God.” Awarded annually, the endowed Scholarship will support a United States citizen with a demonstrated commitment to Christianity for up to four years of undergraduate studies at ICU’s College of Liberal Arts. ICU student Mariko Kawasaki was one of the recipients of the 2021 JICUF Study Abroad Scholarship last year. Mariko studied at the University of California, and has recently completed her study abroad program. We asked her some questions about her time at UC.
JICUF has helped recruit seven Syrian students through the Syrian Scholars Initiative. This year marks the final year of student recruitment for SSI, and we will continue to support refugee and displaced students through other means, including funding the Japanese Language School Pathways program administered by the NPO Pathways Japan.
