The Sustainable Development Goals Projects (SDG Projects) is a funding opportunity offered by the Japan ICU Foundation to support student-led projects that are aligned with and contributes to the SDGs. This initiative prioritizes projects implemented on campus or within the local community during the academic term.

Through the SDG Projects, JICUF aspires to cultivate the ideals of global citizenship by giving students the chance to conceptualize and execute projects that resonate with the SDGs. In the process, students will naturally acquire project management, communication, and critical thinking skills, all while exploring how they can contribute to the well-being of humanity.

JICUF supports a variety of activities through this program. The following are examples of projects we can support. In addition to these, we are also looking forward to your creative ideas.

ELIGIBILITY

The SDG Projects are open to all ICU students. Degree-seeking students in the College of Liberal Arts and the Graduate School, exchange students, and kenkyusei are all eligible to apply. Applications can be submitted individually or collectively as a group. Recipients must be enrolled at ICU through the completion of their project.

HOW TO APPLY

Students can apply for SDG Project funding each academic term.

Step 1: Applicant Meets with JICUF Staff to Discuss Project

Step 4: Applicant Signs and Returns Grant Award Packet
Step 5: The Foundation Disburses Funds

FUNDING CYCLES & TIMELINES

Projects awarded will be eligible for implementation during the following term. For example, if a student applies for and is awarded funding in the Spring Term, they will be eligible to implement the project during the Fall Term. Students may access the application at any time on this website, and applications will be screened and awarded according to the following schedule each year.

JICUF may not fund all of the budget items that are requested.

SDG Project funding cannot be used on the following items:
- Student travel and accommodations
- Personal electronic equipment
If an applicant plans to invite guests to the ICU campus to participate in the project, JICUF will provide the following support:
- Up to two weeks of housing at Dialogue House.
- For International Guests: Round-trip economy-class airfare to Japan and airport transportation.
- For Domestic (Japan) Guests: Round-trip travel between the guest’s home and ICU.
- A daily allowance of ¥5,000 per person to cover meals and local transportation.
- A one-time honorarium of ¥30,000 upon completion of a qualified activity at ICU. Qualified activities may include giving a public lecture, making a keynote presentation at a symposium, leading a workshop, etc.
Use of Campus Facilities
Reporting Requirements
Taxation

Awarded students are responsible for determining the taxability of the funding they receive and pay any necessary taxes on the amount received. JICUF is not able to provide counsel on tax matters and recommends students speak with their local tax office or accountant.

US citizens, US green card holders, or US residents for tax purposes are required to submit a W-9 form to JICUF. Non-US citizens and non-US residents conducting activities in the United States are required to submit a W-8BEN and JICUF is required to withhold up to 30% of the award. Non-US citizens and non-US residents conducting activities outside of the United States are not required to submit anything to JICUF.
