JICUF Hosts the 4th ICU Student Weekend in New York

JICUF held the fourth annual ICU Student Weekend in New York from Friday, January 9 to Sunday, January 11. The event invites ICU students who are studying abroad at universities in North America and Europe through exchange programs to gather in New York. JICUF covered the hotel expenses and the New Year’s party, while students paid for their own travel. This year, a total of 19 students came together in New York from California, Washington, Vermont, and New Jersey in the United States, as well as from the United Kingdom, Italy, and Iceland.Most students arrived in New York on Thursday, the 8th. JICUF hosts the third ICU Student Weekend in New York

JICUF held its third annual ICU Student Weekend in New York from Friday, January 10th to Sunday, January 12th. This event invites ICU students studying at universities in the US and Canada through exchange programs to New York. This year, among the 59 students studying in North America, 34 students participated from near and far, including such locations as Vermont, New Jersey, California, Ohio and Vancouver! JICUF covered the cost of accommodation, two meals, and museum admission fees; each student paid for their travel expenses. JICUF Holds Its Board Meeting and Reception in New York

JICUF held its fall board meeting in New York on Saturday, September 9th. The night before the board meeting, JICUF hosted a reception at an Italian restaurant in Midtown for ICU alumni and friends. Approximately 70 people attended the reception, including ICU President Shoichiro Iwakiri, Vice President for International Academic Exchange Mark Williams, Managing Trustee Tetsuro Tomioka, ICU alumni living in or visiting New York, friends of JICUF, and JICUF trustees and staff.

Global Link Alumni Interview: Tomoaki Saito & Yukiko Takei

From 2014 to 2019, JICUF hosted Global Link, a summer program for ICU undergraduate students. (The program was canceled in 2020 due to the pandemic, and there are plans to reintroduce it in 2024.) With the purpose of helping students contemplate their future, Global Link provided the opportunity to explore a wide range of global careers. Students selected by JICUF spent the month of July in New York and Washington, D.C., participating in office visits, roundtables, volunteer activities and professional skills workshops with the cooperation of ICU alumni and other professionals. For this article, we spoke with Ms. Minako Oki Ahearn (class of 1982), founder of the Japanese-English dual language immersion charter school, International Charter Academy of Georgia. The connection between Minako and ICU precedes her own birth. Her father, Hideo Oki, served as an assistant to Swiss theologian Dr. Emil Brunner when he taught at ICU from 1953 to 1955. Just 10 years after the war, both of her parents were fortunate enough to receive scholarships from the United States to pursue studies at Union Theological Seminary in New York, where she was born.
