Last week, JICUF staff Fernando Rojas and Luke Palermo visited the ICU campus to promote opportunities that JICUF provides for ICU students. Here is a report from Luke.
In July, JICUF welcomed twelve ICU undergraduate students for our Global Link summer program. During the four weeks, from July 5th to 27th, the students were exposed to global careers in New York City and Washington, D.C. Calling on the wide network of ICU alumni and friends in both cities, JICUF organized office visits, professional roundtables, networking events, volunteer activities and professional skills workshops. The activities aimed to inspire the students as they contemplate their future career paths.
From March 7th to 20th, Professor Stephen Nagy led a group of six ICU students on the 2018 Global Link China (GL China) program. Previously known as the Japan-China Young Leaders Development Project, GL China offers ICU students the opportunity to foster a deeper understanding of Sino-Japanese relations through direct interaction between youth in Japan and China.
We are happy to introduce our new photography intern, Ms. Hana Kamio. Hana is an undergraduate student at ICU, and she will be taking photographs of JICUF-sponsored events and programs on campus. We asked her to introduce herself.
From July 5th to 29th, we will host the 3rd annual Global Link program here in NYC! This year, we are excited to welcome 12 undergraduate students from ICU and spend an event-packed 4 weeks with them. Ms. Shiori Kitajima, ICU alumna and recent Teacher’s College, Columbia University graduate, has also joined as an intern to help us run the program.
In 2014 the Japan ICU Foundation launched two programs, Global Link and Rethinking Peace Studies. Global Link is a summer program for ICU students in New York City and Rethinking Peace Studies is an academic program that has involved ICU faculty along with scholars and practitioners from around the world.
JICUF staff visit ICU at least once a year, if not more often, to check in with their counterparts and maintain a current impression of campus life. My JICUF colleague Tara DeWorsop and I spent two weeks at ICU this past January. The main objective of our visit was to highlight our new JICUF grants initiative and continuing Global Link program.
What does it mean to be sustainable? How can we build community between diverse social factions? What is the role of service in achieving sustainability? These were some of the questions posed to the six ICU students who took part in Global Link 2015 this July.
