JICUF has been supporting Team Asunaro’s volunteer activities in the Tohoku Region through our faculty grant program. Professor Etsuko Kato (anthropology) recruits ICU students to participate in recovery efforts in Tohoku organized by Team Asunaro, a group founded by four friends immediately after the devastating earthquake of 2011. Hikari Okada, a sophomore student at ICU, participated in one such trip from March 16th to 18th and shared his experience.
Tim Fraser was an exchange student at ICU in fall 2014. At the time, he was a junior student at Middlebury College, and since then he has graduated and returned to Japan as a Fulbright Fellow. During his time at ICU, Tim participated in Team Asunaro’s volunteer activities in Tohoku, which the JICUF sponsored with funds raised from alumni and friends after the Tohoku Earthquake of 2011. Tim kindly agreed to be interviewed by us.
Professor Etsuko Kato (anthropology) received a grant from the JICUF this spring. The ¥336,000 grant is being used to enable ICU students to participate in activities led by Team Asunaro, a volunteer group that has been contributing to recovery efforts in Tohoku. We interviewed Mr. Shimpei Suga, leader of Team Asunaro, and Prof. Kato.
