In 2014 the Japan ICU Foundation launched two programs, Global Link and Rethinking Peace Studies. Global Link is a summer program for ICU students in New York City and Rethinking Peace Studies is an academic program that has involved ICU faculty along with scholars and practitioners from around the world.
A couple of times per year I have the privilege of visiting ICU. This year, I was fortunate enough to schedule my first visit in early April during sakura season.
We are pleased to announce a new grants initiative for ICU students and faculty. As detailed on our website, starting in 2016 we will provide direct support for activities planned and executed by members of the ICU community through our Grants for Faculty and Grants for Students initiatives.
Dr. David W. Vikner retired as President of the Japan ICU Foundation this past August after 13 years of service. David’s career in global education spanned five decades and two continents, North America and Asia. He taught and worked in Hong Kong, Taiwan, China and in New York City, where he spent the latter half of his career serving as the President of two significant organizations, the United Board for Christian Higher Education in Asia and the Japan ICU Foundation.

Following a recent collaboration between ICU, the JICUF and the Carnegie Council for Ethics in International Affairs, ICU Professor Katsuhiko Mori and JICUF Vice President Paul Hastings contributed short reflections to an online photo essay produced by the Carnegie Council’s Devin Stewart.
JICUF Board Chair Sam Shepherd and I had the pleasure of meeting with Dr. Mei Li during our visit to ICU in early June. Dr. Li is the first Anne E. Ofstedal Fellow, a program created by the United Board in memory of former United Board staff member Anne Ofstedal. Dr. Li, a member of the faculty at Yunnan University’s School of Public Administration, is spending the Spring Term at ICU.
Rethinking Peace Studies II: Memory was held on March 27 and 28th on the 20th floor of the bell tower of Riverside Church in NYC. Rethinking Peace Studies (RPS) is a collaboration between ICU, Rutgers University and the Japan ICU Foundation that seeks to critically rethink the discipline of peace studies.
