JICUF has helped recruit seven Syrian students through the Syrian Scholars Initiative. This year marks the final year of student recruitment for SSI, and we will continue to support refugee and displaced students through other means, including funding the Japanese Language School Pathways program administered by the NPO Pathways Japan.
In May, five Ukrainian students were welcomed to ICU through the Japan-Ukraine University Pathways program co-managed by JICUF and Pathways Japan. The program has since expanded to other universities in Japan.
Last month, the Common Good Grant (CGG) student committee made their decisions on which organizations will be awarded grants. Read more about the selected organizations and work of the student committee over this past year.
JICUF relaunched the grants program this fall, and awarded grants to 11 projects (three faculty, four students, four alumni). Here is the list of awardees.
Myra Lotus Shikimachi-Stickney and Julia Yamaguchi are the fourth cohort of recipients of JICUF’s United States Scholars Initiative (USSI) scholarship. USSI aims to increase the number of degree-seeking undergraduate students from the United States at ICU. This merit scholarship provides full-tuition support for four years of undergraduate studies at ICU.
JICUF recently recruited two ICU students, Kira Taylor and Rika Asakura, as our first Communications Interns. Their main responsibility is to disseminate information about the opportunities that JICUF provides to current ICU students, and with their help, we launched the JICUF official LINE account!
JICUF is relaunching the grants program this fall! Starting August 30, ICU students, faculty, and now alumni can apply for funding for projects focused on sustainability, DEI or peacebuilding.
Current ICU undergraduate students Nanako Yaguchi, Stiven Horita, and Mia Fosco, as well as March 2021 graduate Manami Sekine will host the next session of the JICUF Global Alumni Speaker Series on Tuesday, May 25. The students attended one of the past sessions of the series, and approached JICUF about hosting their own session. They decided to invite 2015 graduate Honami Iizuka as the speaker.
This spring, the Service Learning Center at ICU and JICUF launched a new program called the Common Good Grant (CGG). Learn more about the program and its goal of strengthening ties between ICU and the local community.
