Last December, JICUF Student Activity Fund recipient and ICU student Akiyo Sasaki and co-organizers Machi Niiya, Ayumi Murase, Rio Kokuta, and Shimon Hibi began the “Nihongo de Itadakimasu: Cultural Exchange through Japanese Language and Food” project. The aim of the project was to promote intercultural communication by inviting ICU students of all Japanese levels to mingle with each other and learn about Japanese culture.
Last week, JICUF staff Fernando Rojas and Luke Palermo visited the ICU campus to promote opportunities that JICUF provides for ICU students. Here is a report from Luke.
Earlier this year, fourth year language education major Mikiko Saigo was awarded ¥188,000 via the JICUF Student Travel Fund to conduct her research project “Teaching Japanese as a Foreign/Heritage Language in Canada: Ethnography and Interviews to Reconsider the Approaches.” Mikiko traveled to Canada from June to September, and the JICUF grant covered her airfare.
Anastazy Maletz is the first recipient of JICUF’s United States Scholars Initiative (USSI) scholarship. This merit-based scholarship provides full-tuition support for four years of undergraduate study at ICU. Anastazy matriculated at ICU in September, and we asked him about his experiences at ICU so far.
Mana Yamagata, a fourth-year Literature major, received a ¥474,500 grant this spring to plan a Modern Dance Society (MDS) performance. This fall, they invited New York-based choreographer and ICU alum Kensaku Shinohara and Taiwan-based dance group Seed Dance Company to ICU to put on a collaborative performance. The ICU × Taiwan × New York Dance Project: “Woohi Chung” (meaning “five minutes” in Chinese) was performed four times in the West Wing of the Diffendorfer Memorial Hall (known as the “Shin-D”) from September 18th to 20th. We interviewed MDS members to learn about their project.
On November 15, Professor Tatsuhiko Itoh and Ms. Takako Tajima of the ICU Admissions Center arrived in New York City to collaborate with JICUF on the second leg of an East Coast recruitment trip. Having spent a few days in Boston, Professor Itoh and Ms. Tajima were eager to inform NYC high schoolers of the opportunities available to them at ICU. For the next three days, we worked together to network with students, teachers, and counselors.
Tim Fraser was an exchange student at ICU in fall 2014. At the time, he was a junior student at Middlebury College, and since then he has graduated and returned to Japan as a Fulbright Fellow. During his time at ICU, Tim participated in Team Asunaro’s volunteer activities in Tohoku, which the JICUF sponsored with funds raised from alumni and friends after the Tohoku Earthquake of 2011. Tim kindly agreed to be interviewed by us.
