Thomas “Tim” Winant has a long relationship with both ICU and JICUF. In the early 60s, he studied abroad at ICU as an “OYR” (exchange student), and again in the mid-60s as a special student taking an intensive course in Japanese. In the 1980s, he was on the Board of JICUF, and returned to ICU in 1990 to serve as the Assistant to the President and the Dean of International Affairs until 1999. We asked Tim to share his unique story in a series of articles. Here is part 1.
Ms. Jessica Cork studied at ICU from 1995 to 1996 as an “OYR” (“One Year Regular,” or exchange student) when she was an undergraduate student at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. After graduation, she joined the JET program and worked for the Consulate General of Japan in Atlanta for over a decade. She is currently Vice President of Community Engagement and Communications in the YKK Corporation of America. Ms. Cork shares career advice based on her experiences with current students and recent graduates.
The national round of the Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition was held in February, and the ICU team won third place overall. Two students placed third and fourth in oral presentation separately. Under the guidance of Assistant Professor Hiromichi Matsuda, ICU students have been competing in moot court competition for the last several years.
Wayne Osako, who studied at ICU from 1990 to 1991 as an OYR (exchange student) from the University of California, Riverside, played an instrumental role in the issuance of the “Go For Broke” stamp that honors Japanese-American soldiers who served during WWII. We asked Wayne to share his story.
Chair of the JICUF Board of Trustees Phyllis Larson will leave her role and the Board in March. She studied at ICU in the 1960s. We asked her to reflect on her time at JICUF.
The JICUF Board of Trustees recently adopted new mission and vision statements that reaffirm our founders’ vision.
In July, JICUF launched a series of online meetings with UNHCR to discuss higher education initiatives for refugees in Asia and the Pacific with institutions across the region. Two sessions have already been held, with about 80 participants representing close to 20 countries across the region. Two more sessions will be held in September.
ICU was one of the first universities in Japan to announce switching to online learning in response to the COVID-19 crisis. JICUF is supporting ICU by covering ICU’s Zoom license fee for a year. To learn how online learning has been going so far, we interviewed Professor Insung Jung.
Mr. Shinichi Hirabayashi graduated from the College of Liberal Arts in 1963 and the Graduate School of Public Administration in 1965. He was the President of the ICU Alumni Association of the Americas in the early 2000s and currently resides in Connecticut. We are excited to share his story.
