JICUF has been exploring ways to continue supporting the ICU community in a drastically changed environment. We are excited to announce three new initiatives: the Global Alumni Speakers Series, Japan and the Sustainable Development Goals, and the Common Good Grant Project.
Last fall, ICU graduate student Philip Reed, majoring in Japanese Culture Studies within the Comparative Culture department, was awarded a grant from the JICUF Student Activities Fund to conduct fieldwork at Mt. Kōya.
The 2020 Spring JICUF Undergraduate Research Day was held at ICU on February 21, and 33 graduating students presented their research.
ICU first year student Taiga Ogusu received a Student Activities Fund grant from JICUF in fall 2019. He and his group Entre organized an entrepreneurship event on February 7.
This spring, third year Education and International Relations student Naho Yoshikawa was awarded ¥316,523 via the JICUF Student Travel Fund. Her proposal was to research the relationship between students’ self-concept and learning environments in Oloitokitoki village, Kenya, using psychological and pedagogical observation methods this July.
In April, three ICU students participated in the 2019 Jean-Pictet International Humanitarian Law Competition held in Obernai, France, and ICU graduate student Kalika Kastein won the Best Speaker Award in the Anglophone section. The JICUF grant that their instructor Assistant Professor Hiromichi Matsuda was awarded was used to cover some of the cost of participating in the event. This is a report from Kalika. Yuki Moritani, a fourth-year student at ICU, planned an event with three of his friends to discuss ICU’s philosophy, history and future. The event titled “Discussing the Future of ICU” was held on Tuesday, February 26th. Yuki was awarded 75,000 yen from the JICUF Student Support Funds last fall.
Naoya Johnson is a fourth-year student at ICU who studied abroad at Georgetown University during his third year. While at Georgetown, Naoya took a class titled “Making an Exoneree” in which students studied law by actively assisting the appeals of those in need. Through this class, Naoya and two other students helped exonerate Valentino Dixon, who was wrongfully convicted and imprisoned for 27 years. Last December, JICUF Executive Director Paul Hastings had a chance to interview Naoya.
Ms. Christine Nalubowa obtained her B.A. and M.A. from ICU in the 2010s, and is now based in Uganda. This month, we asked her to share her “ICU story.”
